Many carmakers around the world are facing legal actions and penalty fines, with some already settled and issued, over emissions problems and irregularities. Two of the latest to be investigated here in the UK are Renault and Nissan, part of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. The South Korean government banned the sale of some models from several carmakers that included vehicles manufactured by the Alliance, and recalls have previously been initiated.

Nissan & Renault Emissions investigations

So far, a formal recall has not been issued in the UK. However, the Department for Transport has reportedly highlighted potential discrepancies between NOx emissions tests and real-world driving conditions for some models.

These discrepancies could indicate that Nissan and Renault may be allegedly engaging in behaviour that could lead to emissions testing being cheated; allegations that they strongly refute.

Carmakers like VW have already faced legal action over the use of defeat device technology. Defeat devices can be a type of software that could sense when a car is in test conditions which can then lead to emissions-reducing technology being engaged. This can lead to the engine performing at a level that will pass the emissions tests and follow regulations but could reduce overall vehicle performance. When out on the roads, the defeat device could prevent emissions-reducing technology from working, leading to the release far more dangerous NOx emissions.

It is reported that Nissan had been previously asked to modify designs over emissions questions, but the carmaker refused. As confirmed above, at this moment, Nissan and Renault strongly refute any claims that they have used defeat devices in their vehicles to cheat emissions tests.
