As of August 2nd, South Korea revoked the certification of 83,000 vehicles – some 80 Volkswagen models in their country. South Korea is not taking the Volkswagen emissions scandal lightly, and after halting sales on vehicles, and fining them 17.8 billion won ($16 million), they are taking yet more action!

Now, the South Korean Chief of Audi Volkswagen has been summoned over the emissions scandal by State Prosecutors.

They are doing a great deal more than our own government as we continue to fight for thousands of people affected here in the UK as part of our rapidly growing legal action.

Summoned by State Prosecutor

Johannes Thammer was summoned before Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on the charges of being involved in the emissions scandal, as well as being involved in fabricating reports on noise levels and fuel efficiency.

Thammer has been in charge of vehicle import and sales since 2012. He refused to say whether the German Headquarters had anything to do with it.

Before entering the prosecutors’ office. he said:

“First of all, I want to say that I am sorry for the situation and we will do everything, faithfully, to cooperate with the prosecutor.”

Possible legal action?

The total number of Audi and Volkswagen vehicles that have had their certifications cancelled so far is 209,000 – 68% of the 300,000+ cars that the automaker has sold in South Korea since 2007.

Audi Volkswagen is said to be considering countermeasures, such as legal action against the action taken by the South Korean government so far. Considering the current reputation and credibility of Volkswagen, and them already faltering in the local market, we’re not sure what sort of chances they might have…

Emissions scandal

All of this could have been avoided if Volkswagen had not thought that they could cheat emissions regulations and get away with it. This is the really important point that we must always remember.

Here in the UK we are leading the fight for justice for thousands of victims affected by the scandal. If you have yet to join our legal action, contact us as soon as you can to avoid missing out.

A $15 billion settlement has already been made with US customers to compensate them, and we remain confident we will be able to reach a settlement for our clients here in the UK as well.

As the scandal continues to unfold we may see more countries follow suit in the no-nonsense footsteps of South Korea.
